League of Thought

League of Thought is a piece that explores the journey of finding peace amidst chaos. Inspired by my personal experiences with stress, the piece reflects my use of meditation and music to clear my mind and achieve a moment of fluidity. It also captures the transition from that brief, blissful state back to the reality of my problems and stress, but with a renewed mindset to confront and manage those challenges.

During my time at the Sō Percussion Summer Institute, I participated in a project led by Clara Warnaar as part of her series, "A New Age for New Age." This series explores and re-imagines the New Age genre. Our task was to collaborate as percussionists and composers to redefine what New Age music can be. I wrote an outline and worked closely with Jacob Leshnower, Stephanie Bloch, and Viraj Sonawala on this project. They took my initial ideas and helped develop them into a piece that we are all very proud of. I would like to extend a special thank you to each of them for their invaluable contributions.

Flicker

Flicker is a piece that came about by accident. A long bored day at home during a time after hours of doing homework and housekeeping we had left our rooms in our apartment to stretch our legs and flicked on the light switch in the hallway. Our ears sort of perked up at the pitch difference between turning the lights on and off. We began to brainstorm what makes the pitches different and what amplifies the sound of the switches. We then came upon the idea to play with a few switches and make rhythms with them and decided to put pen to paper.

In order to organize this piece we needed to figure out how to mount the switches in a way that was easily accessible but also held the gang boxes and had a housing that could work with the sound amplification. A few different sketches were drawn up but ultimately we came up with an open-box design which mounted the switches on a table-like surface and an access port in the front to house compressor mics or contact mics. This design led to more ideas involving utilizing the box itself for sound as well. From the start we knew this piece would be a little more theatrical and we both knew that we were going to have a lot of fun on the creative side of this project.

Trip To Nowhere

Trip To Nowhere is a piece that captures the unique tranquility of using driving as a form of meditation. I’m often asked about meditation techniques, and I always emphasize that meditation is anything that helps you stay connected with yourself - there’s no single right way to do it. While there are many guided practices and popular methods, meditation can be deeply personal and sometimes unconventional. Driving isn’t often mentioned as a meditative practice, but for me, it’s one of the most powerful. There’s something incredibly liberating about hitting the road with no destination in mind - just me, my music, and the endless possibilities ahead. It’s in those moments that I find clarity, peace, and inspiration.

Time and Space

Time and Space is a solo piece that delves into the mysteries of the cosmos and the intriguing relationship between time and space. Inspired by my undergraduate studies in astronomy, I became deeply fascinated by the life cycles of stars and the complex organization of the universe, along with how these cosmic phenomena influence life here on Earth. This passion for astronomy compelled me to express these concepts through music.

Designed as a beginner to intermediate marimba solo, Time and Space serves a dual purpose: it invites performers to explore both the wonder of the universe and the practical development of their mallet technique. Each movement focuses on specific mallet skills, allowing the movements to be performed independently or as a cohesive whole depending on the player’s preference and level. One of the defining features of this piece is its incorporation of a wide variety of time signatures. The frequent changes and use of odd meters are meant to reflect the complexity and fluidity of how time is perceived in space, offering performers a hands-on challenge in counting and navigating shifting rhythms. This approach not only enhances musicality but also builds essential rhythmic skills, particularly in handling
quick transitions and mastering less common time signatures.

Through Time and Space, players can engage with both an imaginative sonic journey and meaningful technical growth, fostering a deeper appreciation for rhythm, meter, and expressive performance on the marimba.
